A heated exchange between Padraig Harrington and NBC's on-course reporter Roger Maltbie has become a talking point at the U.S. Senior Open in Colorado Springs. The dispute arose from an incident during Harrington's opening round, sparking debate among golf fans and commentators.
"Never on a golf course stand and look at somebody looking for a golf ball," Harrington is heard saying to Maltbie in a video captured after the round. "You've played golf all your life. You understand."
The disagreement centers on a moment during Thursday's round on the 15th hole, where Harrington's tee shot landed in a dense thicket. A search party of approximately a dozen people spent the allotted three minutes looking for the ball, but their efforts proved unsuccessful. Harrington was forced to return to the tee to take his third shot, ultimately managing to salvage a bogey. Despite the setback, he entered the weekend tied for the lead.
Maltbie, a veteran on-course reporter with experience playing on the PGA Tour in the 1970s and 80s, was present in the vicinity during the search. Speaking to Golf.com on Saturday, he explained that his responsibilities as a reporter prevented him from joining the search.
The two professionals addressed the issue near the scoring area a day after the incident.
Maltbie is heard questioning Harrington, "So I should have disobeyed my producer?"
In his Golf.com interview, Maltbie revealed the intensity of the moment, stating he almost retorted, "All these years, all these checks I've gotten from NBC, your name isn't on any of them."
