Djokovic Eyes Record 25th Grand Slam Title at Wimbledon
WIMBLEDON, England – Novak Djokovic, a name synonymous with Grand Slam dominance, faces the familiar question at Wimbledon: Could this be his last appearance? The Serbian superstar's response remains consistent, leaving the door open to possibilities.
"Whether it could be my 'last dance'," Djokovic acknowledged, echoing the reporter's query, "I'm not sure – as I'm not sure about Roland Garros or any other Slam that I play next." At 38, Djokovic balances ambition with realism, acknowledging the uncertainties of a long career.
While aiming for "several more years" at the highest level, Djokovic recognizes the importance of physical and mental well-being. "That's the goal. But you never know at this stage."
The All England Club, however, presents a unique opportunity. Djokovic hinted that Wimbledon might be his best shot at securing a record-extending 25th Grand Slam singles title.
"I would probably agree that Wimbledon could be the best chance, because of the results I had, because of how I feel, how I play in Wimbledon," said Djokovic, who is set to compete against Alexandre Muller in the first round this Tuesday. "Just getting that extra push mentally and motivation to perform the best tennis at the highest level."
With seven Wimbledon championships under his belt, Djokovic has a strong track record on grass. He was agonizingly close to an eighth title, having lost to Carlos Alcaraz in both the 2023 and 2024 finals.
Djokovic has consistently reached the title match in his last six Wimbledon appearances (excluding the canceled 2020 tournament), securing victories in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. His last defeat prior to the 2023 final came in 2017 against Tomas Berdych.
Like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams before him, Djokovic now faces questions about his future in the sport.
Despite not having won a Grand Slam title in over a year, Djokovic remains a formidable competitor.
He reached the Australian Open semifinals this January, withdrawing due to a hamstring injury after one set, and the French Open semifinals this month, losing to Jannik Sinner. Following the latter, Djokovic paid tribute to the court, hinting it could be his last appearance at Roland-Garros.
Another highlight of the past year was Djokovic's gold medal victory for Serbia at the Paris Olympics, defeating Alcaraz.
"These tournaments give me the biggest drive, still," Djokovic stated. "I like the way I feel right now, physically. Tennis-wise, I've been playing good on the practice sessions. Obviously completely different when you start a tournament. I'll try to have a very good tournament and go as far as I can."
