Kajol's comeback to the silver screen in the horror-thriller "Maa" is off to a promising start, with the film exceeding expectations at the domestic box office. Directed by Vishal Furia, the movie experienced a significant surge on Saturday, bringing its total India net earnings for the first two days to an estimated ₹10.30 crore.
The film, which premiered in theaters on Friday, garnered ₹4.65 crore net on its opening day, according to sacnilk.com. This figure surpassed initial trade predictions, which had projected an opening in the range of ₹3.50 to ₹4.50 crore. The film's production company officially announced the opening day numbers on its X account, accompanied by a poster that read, "Fear Finds Faith – ₹4.93 Cr Day 1 NBOC India."
Saturday witnessed substantial growth for the film, with an additional ₹5.65 crore added to its earnings, driven by increased attendance during evening and late-night screenings. Hindi occupancy rates rose to an average of 26.38% throughout the day, with night shows reaching a peak of approximately 38.45%.
"Maa" features Kajol, alongside Indraneil Sengupta, Kherin Sharma, and Ronit Roy. The story revolves around a mother who transforms into Goddess Kali in order to break a terrifying curse fueled by fear, blood, and betrayal.
This film marks Kajol's first major theatrical release since "Salaam Venky" (2022), and she expressed her enthusiasm in anticipation of the film's debut.
In a statement to ANI, she said "I am very excited. My film is releasing in theatres after a long time and I am extremely happy about it".
The actress further commented, “Every actor has to reinvent himself or herself with time. I had never thought I would do a horror film, but here we are. I am extremely proud of this film. The script is quite good. I am a big mythological buff. I love our Indian mythology. We have so many stories. So, I think it was one of my favourite stories.”
Kajol concluded, “I am very grateful that I have done this film. I think we have made a very good film. Now the audience will tell... But, Maa ki kasam, humne achhi film banai hai,” she laughed.
Despite a limited release across 1,500 screens in India and facing competition from movies, "Maa" has maintained its position and is on track for a strong opening weekend. However, "Kajol's horror film" is currently trailing behind F1 which earned an estimated Rs 15 crore in just 2 days of its release.
