Emma Raducanu weighed in on Carlos Alcaraz’s new haircut, joining the light-hearted buzz at the 2025 US Open. The Spaniard debuted a buzzcut in his opening-round match against Reilly Opelka, a look that quickly became a talking point.
The style drew mixed reactions, with Frances Tiafoe jokingly calling it “horrendous,” noting that for someone who usually takes pride in regular haircuts, it was a surprising choice.
After her 6-2, 6-1 second-round win over Indonesian qualifier Janice Tjen, Raducanu was asked about the chatter during her press conference. She felt Tiafoe’s criticism was a little harsh, suggesting that Alcaraz’s confidence allowed him to pull off the look.

For Raducanu, the focus was less on the haircut itself and more on how he carried it. She underlined that a hairstyle has no impact on performance, showing clear support for the world No. 3’s relaxed and self-assured approach.
“I think Frances was harsh on him. I think the fact that he does it with confidence and owns it I think he pulls it off. I’d say support him,” Raducanu said in the press conference after her match against Tjen.
Raducanu has marched into the third round of 2025 US Open, carrying strong momentum with back-to-back dominant wins reminiscent of her 2021 championship run. In the second round, the Briton produced a commanding display against Tjen, conceding just three games in a match that lasted around an hour.
Raducanu, ranked No.36 in the world, impressed with her aggressive baseline play and sharp serving, finishing with eight aces, a 76 per cent first-serve success rate, and winning 84 per cent of points behind her first delivery.
Raducanu will now face 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, who overcame Tereza Valentova in her previous match. This marks Raducanu’s first appearance in the third round at Flushing Meadows since her remarkable title-winning run four years ago.
