Sometimes hate my players, sometimes I love them: Ruben Amorim delivers bizarre rant

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim gave an emotional and unusual press conference ahead of his side’s Premier League clash against Burnley. His comments came just days after United’s shock defeat to Grimsby Town, which knocked them out of the EFL Cup.

Rather than backing down from the criticism he received after the loss, Amorim explained that he would always be open about his emotions, even if it appeared extreme.

“To be really honest with you, every time we have a defeat like that, I’m going to be like that. Sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love them, sometimes I want to defend them. This is my way, and I’m going to be like that,” Amorim said.

He admitted that some experienced figures had advised him to remain calmer with the media, but he rejected that approach, claiming his passion for the game meant he would always react strongly. “Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years,” he added.

Reflecting on his team’s form, Amorim said he had been surprised by the sudden dip in performance levels, given how strong United looked in pre-season. “We had a very good pre-season, we were playing better, being consistent. Then we had that kind of performance, and I was really disappointed with everything. But now it’s a new game and I’m focused on the next one.”

Amorim admitted that, in the immediate aftermath of the Grimsby loss, he briefly considered his future at the club. However, he insisted those thoughts were reactionary, and he is now fully committed to bouncing back. “After the Grimsby game, I felt maybe somebody else should take my place. But I don’t feel that now. The hardest part of defeat is not always the result, it’s the way we lose — not fighting for the ball or running enough.”

When asked about transfer speculation, Amorim refused to give details. Reports have suggested Alejandro Garnacho could be sold and that midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is considering a loan move for more game time. Amorim dismissed the rumours, stressing that Mainoo is part of his plans. “He needs to fight for his place, and we need him,” he said.
