Shreyas Iyer has been named the India A captain for two multi-day matches against Australia A, set to be played from September 16 in Lucknow. Iyer’s appointment comes days after he was ignored for India’s Asia Cup squad, despite having a sensational run in the shortest format in both domestic cricket and the IPL.
Iyer last played Tests for India in February 2024 vs England and hasn’t been selected for the longest format since then. He had a good season for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25, scoring 480 runs from seven innings at an average of 68.57 with two centuries.
In 81 first class matches so far, the Mumbai batter has scored 6363 runs at an average of 48.57 with 15 hundreds and 33 fifties. Iyer will be leading the A side featuring India players such as Devdutt Padikkal, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Prasidh Krishna and Khaleel Ahmed with Dhruve Jurel as his deputy. Star players KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj will replace two players in the squad after the 1st multi-day match.
India A and Australia A will also be playing three one-day games, scheduled to take place on September 30, 2025, October 03, 2025 and October 05, 2025 respectively in Kanpur. The squad for the series will also be announced in the coming weeks, with speculations around Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli playing in the series. The duo is set to make their return to international cricket in October, during the three-match series against Australia.
India A Squad for multi-day matches: Shreyas Iyer (C), Abhimanyu Easwaran, N Jagadeesan (WK), Sai Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel (VC & WK), Devdutt Padikkal, Harsh Dubey, Ayush Badoni, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Tanush Kotian, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Khaleel Ahmed, Manav Suthar, Yash Thakur
