After a nightmare start to the Premier League season, Manchester United’s troubles deepened on Saturday, August 30, as new signing Matheus Cunha was forced off with a hamstring injury during their clash against Burnley at Old Trafford.
The Brazilian forward appeared lively early on, making sharp runs and pressing with intent. But around the half-hour mark, while attempting a sprint into the box, he pulled up clutching his hamstring. Cunha immediately signaled for medical attention and, after brief treatment, was substituted for Joshua Zirkzee.
It was a frustrating moment for both the player and the fans, as Cunha had looked like the only dynamic spark in United’s attack. Since his arrival, he has been eager to show his creativity and movement, providing glimpses of the cutting edge that has been missing in United’s frontline.
Cunha joined the Red Devils on a five-year deal, with an option to extend for another year, after moving from Wolverhampton Wanderers. While the club has yet to confirm the severity of his injury, hamstring problems typically raise concerns over several weeks on the sidelines.
For manager Ruben Amorim, the timing could not be worse. United are already under scrutiny following their embarrassing exit from the EFL Cup, where they crashed out against fourth-division side Grimsby Town on penalties. The early setbacks have left fans questioning the squad’s depth and readiness, and Cunha’s absence could stretch them even thinner.
Despite the injury blow, Cunha has spoken positively about his decision to join Manchester United, emphasising the scale of the opportunity. “It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world and when Ruben came to me and showed me the project, I felt like it’s a challenge I want to take in my career. United is a club I needed to be at, and it’s a big privilege,” he said in his first club interview.
As supporters await an update on his condition, United will be hoping that Cunha’s setback is not long-term. The Brazilian’s energy and invention could be crucial in reviving a season that is already in danger of slipping away.
