Boxing Rankings Shakeup: Prograis, Duarte, Canizales Eye Top Spots After Recent Bouts

Carlos Canizales avenged his loss to Petchmanee CP Freshmart with a fifth-round KO to win the WBC junior flyweight title and replace Freshmart in the ESPN rankings at No. 5 on Friday in Caracas, Venezuela.

On Saturday in Chicago, Oscar Duarte muscled through Kenneth Sims Jr. with a majority decision win in a WBA junior welterweight title eliminator. It was a close and competitive affair between the slugging Duarte and the technical Sims. However, Duarte's strength and relentless pressure were too much for Sims to overcome as he earned the decision and may be in line to challenge champion Gary Antuanne Russell.

Both fighters remain outside ESPN's top 10 at 140 pounds.

But the highlight of the weekend was the co-main event slugfest between Regis Prograis and Joseph "Jojo" Diaz. The junior welterweight fight between two former champions played out like a meeting of boxers desperate for a win as they delivered an entertaining bout that Prograis won by unanimous decision.

Behind the snappy jab, Prograis -- who entered the fight coming off one-sided losses to Devin Haney and Jack Catterall -- was able to rack up points on Diaz. But Diaz was the one to get the fireworks going early, rocking Prograis with a short left hand in the opening round. With six loses in his last eight fights, Diaz, a former junior lightweight world champion, was desperate to turn his luck around and get back into the title conversation at 140 pounds.

Diaz rattled Prograis multiple times in the fight but was unable to finish the job. Prograis was resilient and routinely found ways to turn the tide despite being on the verge of a knockdown. It made for pure entertainment over the course of their 10-round battle.

Diaz also had to manage a nasty cut on the outside of his left eye in Round 4 that threatened to call a halt to the bout at any given moment. But Diaz powered through and had success fighting at short distance. However, Prograis was the better operator from the outside, smashing Diaz with a stiff jab and straight left hand to keep him at bay. It was just enough to earn two scores of 96-94, with the 98-92 scorecard a bit too wide from such a competitive affair.

"I felt like I won the fight," said Prograis. "My jab was working all night. It was landing. I think he caught me with some big shots, but at the same time I was never [hurt]. I probably got buzzed the first time he caught me, but after that, I wasn't buzzed no more."

Prograis and Diaz stay outside of the top 10 in the junior welterweight division for now.

ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. Rankings will change based on recent results and performances. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.

Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to reenter the rankings after his next bout.
